For Families
Big decision. Clear answers.
Choosing care for a loved one is one of the biggest decisions a family can make. Here are the questions families ask us most.
What exactly is an Adult Family Home (AFH)?
An Adult Family Home is a regular residential home licensed by the Washington State
Department of Social and Health Services (DSHS) to provide housing, meals, laundry,
supervision, and personal care to a limited number of adults (LifeLine is licensed for
up to six residents). AFHs are governed by Chapter 70.128 RCW and Chapter 388-76 WAC,
and are regularly inspected by the state.
How is it different from assisted living or a nursing home?
Assisted living facilities and nursing homes are larger, institutional settings that may
serve dozens or hundreds of residents. An Adult Family Home offers many of the same
personal care services in a true house, with far fewer residents and a much more
personal, family-style atmosphere. Many families find AFHs offer more individual
attention at a comparable or lower cost.
Who is a good fit for LifeLine?
Adults who need help with daily activities — such as bathing, dressing, medications,
meals, or mobility — but who want to live in a comfortable home rather than a large
facility. During our assessment process, we evaluate each person's needs to make sure
we can provide safe, appropriate care within the scope of our license.
How does the move-in process work?
It starts with a conversation and a tour. From there, Washington State requires a full
assessment and a negotiated care plan before admission, along with a disclosure of
services and a written admission agreement — so you know exactly what care and services
are provided and what they cost. We walk families through every step.
How is care paid for?
Residents may pay privately, and many Adult Family Homes also serve residents whose
care is funded through Washington Medicaid programs (such as COPES) administered by
DSHS. Long-term care insurance and VA benefits may also apply. Contact us and we'll
help you understand the options for your situation.
Can family visit? How will we stay informed?
Always. Families are welcome here, and residents have the right to visitors of their
choosing. We provide regular updates and encourage ongoing involvement in care
planning — you remain a central part of your loved one's life and care.
How do I verify a home's license and inspection history?
You can look up any Adult Family Home's license status, capacity, specialty
designations, and inspection reports using the DSHS
Adult Family Home Locator.
We encourage every family to do this for any home they consider — including ours.
Resident Rights
Your loved one's rights are protected by law
Every resident of a Washington Adult Family Home is protected by the state resident rights law (Chapter 70.129 RCW), which includes the right to:
- Be treated with dignity and respect
- Privacy and confidentiality
- Participate in their own care planning
- Be free from abuse, neglect, and exploitation
- Manage their own finances
- Voice concerns without fear of retaliation
- Receive visitors and communicate freely
